Juma’s Personal Touch Adds a Great Vibe to Great Food
Juma’s is named, not for the African art displayed (the menu is an eclectic mix of genuine Thai, classic French and best local) but from the first names of proprietors, Mark and Jules Daghorn, who bring an astonishing level of personal care to the restaurant they plainly love.
Look away from the gorgeous ocean view and you’ll see your table’s glass top rests on a section of trunk of a fallen mahogany tree, done by hand, like the desserts.
Look up at the softly lighted coconut branch-ceiling and you’ll know Juma’s dining room is truly Caribbean - even if you don’t notice the ridiculous number of potted plants it takes a couple of hours daily to water.
Jules and Mark take meticulous care of things. Like their guests. From the coq au vin Mark’s French forebears - i.e., his Gran - cooked for him in Jersey to the local delicacies Jules grew up on in Barbados, everything is made with painstaking care you can taste. Juma’s bar hosts a great Friday afterwork lime but the dining room remains quiet enough to hear the Eagles, Eric Clapton and Bob Marley in the background; those potted plants must absorb the chatter.
